The project

The Wildfire Data Portal (WDP) integrates cutting-edge data, research and practical tools with three main goals: 1) to serve as an open repository to archive, share and access all the data collected (field observations during fires) and related integrative results of fire-atmospheric models, 2) to help improve data gathering methodology and assess its value and use for fundamental research, and 3) to provide user-friendly conceptual software designed to support operational emergency managers in understanding the complex interactions between fire and atmospheric conditions. This software includes visualisations, simulations, and tools to analyse data collected from real fires, existing case studies available in the portal and virtual fire scenarios. By enhancing understanding of how these interactions (such as pyroconvection) affect and drive changes in fire behaviour, the portal aims to help the firefighting community make more informed and effective decisions during extreme wildfire events, ultimately improving safety and response strategies.

The WDP is an output of the EU-funded projects EWED (Extreme Wildfire Events Data hub for improved decision-making, 2024-2025) and ODET (Open Decision-making system for enhancing Europe’s preparedness and response capacities to ExTreme wildfires, 2026-2028). These projects generate data and knowledge on extreme wildfire behaviour and tools and guidance for decision-making, to enhance the capacity to prepare for and respond to this phenomenon. EWED and ODET are a joint effort between fire services, academia and non-profit organisations from Spain, the Netherlands, Greece, Norway and Chile. The data portal will continue to be active once ODET finalises, as an open decision-making tool.
